Future-Proofing RMG: Tackling Automation for Sustainable Growth and Worker Wellbeing
The apparel industry in Bangladesh has been pivotal to the country’s economic progress, emerging as the world’s second-largest exporter of garments. With over four million workers, the majority of whom are women, the industry has significantly shaped the livelihoods of millions. As the sector faces the dual forces of automation and sustainability demands, these trends will fundamentally impact its future.
The Bunon 2030 Initiative, led by LightCastle Partners in partnership with Policy Exchange of Bangladesh, aims to empower women garment workers to navigate the challenges posed by automation and technological advancements. This initiative focuses on sector competitiveness, skills development, and employment opportunities, ensuring that the workforce is prepared for a rapidly evolving industry.
The study, Threads of Progress, serves as the foundation for the initiative, drawing from comprehensive research, stakeholder interviews, and global insights. The findings emphasize the need for a strategic approach to address the impact of automation, decarbonization, and circularity on the apparel sector. Bangladesh must prioritize enhancing production capabilities, adopting higher value-added processes, and preparing its workforce for the 4th Industrial Revolution to remain competitive on the global stage.
Despite current challenges, including supply chain disruptions and rising geopolitical tensions, Bangladesh’s apparel industry has a unique opportunity to evolve. By fostering collaboration across stakeholders and embracing technological advancements, the sector can position itself for sustained growth, ensuring the livelihoods of millions of workers and maintaining its critical role in the global market.
