Food Security and Nutritional Outcomes in Bangladesh: A 2023 Statistical Overview

Hunger and malnutrition severely impact both physical and mental health, leading to numerous diseases and diminishing an individual’s capacity to work effectively. This not only restricts personal income growth and reduces the standard of living but also contributes to economic instability. In response, nations worldwide have prioritized achieving SDG Goal 2: Zero Hunger to mitigate the global food crisis.

To address these challenges, the Global Food Security Index (GFSI) serves as a key tool for assessing and ranking countries based on their food security performance, offering valuable insights for creating sustainable and equitable food systems. According to the GFSI 2022, Bangladesh ranked 80th out of 113 nations.

The Food Insecurity Experience Scale (FIES) 2022 survey revealed a sharp increase in inadequate food availability, rising from 56% in April 2023 to 67% by October-November 2023, effectively doubling food insecurity among lower-income groups. Moreover, the percentage of households unable to access nutritious food rose from 69% to 75% during the same period.

The data further reveals that the bottom 40% of households suffer the most from food insecurity due to their limited disposable income compared to wealthier groups.

In response to this crisis, LightCastle Partners analyzed the food security assessment conducted by the Bangladesh Bureau of Statistics (BBS) and the FIES Survey in June 2023. This evaluation takes into account factors such as households’ living areas, primary income sources, and borrowing behaviors of the lower-income group, providing a comprehensive understanding of the severity of the situation.
