Insight on “Digital Public Infrastructure: Landscape and Opportunities in South Asia” Report

Digital Public Infrastructure (DPI) is emerging as a foundational driver of inclusive digital transformation across South Asia. According to the Asian Development Bank’s latest regional assessment. Covering countries including Bangladesh, India, Nepal, Bhutan, Maldives, and Sri Lanka. The report highlights how interoperable systems such as digital identity, payment platforms, and secure data‑sharing frameworks are reshaping public service delivery, financial inclusion, and private sector innovation.

While many countries have made significant progress in building individual components. There still remain gaps in interoperability, governance alignment, and equitable access continue to limit full impact. The report underscores that coordinated policy reform, technical standards, and cross‑sector collaboration are essential to unlock DPI’s potential for resilient, citizen‑centric digital economies

What insights does the report offer?

  • Interoperability is critical – Digital ID, payments, and data systems must work together to generate systemic impact.
  • Inclusion determines success – DPI must reach rural, low‑income, and digitally marginalized populations to drive equitable growth.
  • Policy coordination matters – Strong regulatory frameworks and cross‑agency alignment are essential for scaling impact.
  • Private sector leverage is key – DPI lowers barriers for startups and fintechs, enabling innovation at scale.
  • Trust underpins adoption – Data protection, consent frameworks, and cybersecurity are foundational to sustainable digital ecosystems.
