FoodTechBangladesh Organizes On-Site Capacity Building Training on Advanced All-Male Scampi Culture

The FoodTechBangladesh program successfully organized on-site training on Advanced Management of All-Male Scampi (Giant Freshwater Prawn) Culture in Patuakhali on 14 June 2026. The training brought together 40 farmers from the Khulna region, providing them with practical knowledge and technical guidance on improving productivity, profitability, and sustainability in freshwater prawn farming through all-male culture technology.

The training was designed to strengthen farmers’ understanding of advanced production techniques and management practices that can significantly improve growth performance and farm returns. Participants received hands-on insights into modern hatchery and pond management approaches, enabling them to adopt more efficient and commercially viable scampi farming practices.

Understanding the Potential of All-Male Scampi Culture

The session introduced farmers to the concept of all-male giant freshwater prawn production, a biotechnology-based approach that enables hatcheries to produce nearly 100% male post-larvae (PL). Since male prawns grow faster and attain larger sizes than females, all-male culture offers several advantages over traditional mixed-sex farming systems.

Key Technical Topics Covered

The training provided participants with practical knowledge on all-male scampi culture, covering pond preparation, water quality management, stocking strategies, feeding and nutrition, molting management, health monitoring, and harvesting techniques. Farmers learned best practices for creating optimal pond conditions, maintaining critical water quality parameters, improving survival rates through effective stocking and feeding practices, managing mineral requirements during molting, and identifying early signs of stress. The session also highlighted production optimization techniques, including size grading and partial harvesting, to enhance productivity, improve stock performance, and support sustainable aquaculture operations.

Key Takeaways for Farmers

The training concluded with several important lessons for participants:

  • All-male technology can significantly outperform conventional mixed-sex scampi culture when combined with proper management practices.
  • Consistent water quality management is essential for maximizing growth and survival.
  • Effective mineral management plays a crucial role in successful molting and overall prawn health.
  • Feeding strategies should be tailored to growth stages and farm conditions.
  • Regular monitoring and record-keeping are critical for making informed farm management decisions.
  • Understanding moon-phase-related molting patterns can help farmers better manage nutrition and pond conditions.

Strengthening Bangladesh’s Aquaculture Sector

The training reflects FoodTechBangladesh’s ongoing commitment to enhancing aquaculture productivity through knowledge transfer, innovation, and capacity building. By equipping farmers with advanced technical skills and modern farming practices, the initiative aims to contribute to a more productive, profitable, and sustainable freshwater prawn sector in Bangladesh.
