FoodTech Bangladesh (FTB) is a six-year, public-private partnership (PPP) aid-to-trade initiative supported by the Embassy of the Kingdom of the Netherlands in Bangladesh. Co-implemented by Larive International and LightCastle Partners, along with six private firms and knowledge institutions from Bangladesh and the Netherlands, the program envisions a EUR 6 million investment to drive sustainable and scalable solutions in the Bangladeshi aquaculture sector.
The primary objective of FTB is to enhance the technical performance of the aquaculture sector while fostering Dutch-Bangladesh collaboration. The program will introduce best practices and knowledge transfer through comprehensive training and the establishment of Centers of Excellence (CoEs) across four regions in Bangladesh. These CoEs will demonstrate innovative, sustainable techniques for improving fish breeding and cultivation.
From September 8th to 12th, representatives from FishTech, De Heus, Viqon, Gemini, Larive, and LightCastle Partners gathered in Bangladesh for a consortium visit. The visit commenced with a meeting at the Embassy of the Kingdom of the Netherlands in Bangladesh, where the consortium met with Ambassador Irma van Dueren and key embassy officials to discuss progress and future strategies.
During the week-long visit, the consortium toured three key sites in Mymensingh, Cox’s Bazar, and Patuakhali, where CoEs are being developed in collaboration with FishTech and De Heus. The purpose of the site visits was to assess the civil works and technological requirements specific to each fish breed and culture practice. Notably, designs for the CoEs in Mymensingh and Cox’s Bazar were finalized, culminating in a contract signing ceremony.
This visit marks a pivotal step toward the completion of the three new CoEs, complementing ongoing construction in Khulna. The partners will also conduct research and trials on on-farm products such as feed additives, aqua specialties, and antibiotic alternatives while offering technical assistance to fish breeders and farmers through the CoEs.
Co-financed by the Netherlands Embassy in Bangladesh, FTB will significantly improve the technical and commercial performance of over 1,800 local fish breeders and farmers through hands-on training at the CoEs and via online courses. Additionally, the partnership aims to reduce post-harvest losses by improving market connectivity between fish breeders, farmers, and end markets.
