Milestone Achievement: Design Signing Ceremony for Mymensingh and Cox’s Bazar Centers of Excellence

On the evening of Thursday, September 12th, 2024, the FoodTech Bangladesh (FTB) initiative reached a key milestone. The designs for the Centers of Excellence (CoEs) in Mymensingh and Cox’s Bazar were finalized. LightCastle Partners hosted the signing ceremony at their office. This event marks a critical step in establishing these cutting-edge facilities. These CoEs will enhance sustainable aquaculture practices in Bangladesh.

Supported by the Embassy of the Kingdom of the Netherlands in Bangladesh, this six-year public-private partnership (PPP) initiative plans to invest EUR 6 million. It aims to develop scalable and sustainable solutions for the Bangladeshi aquaculture sector. Larive International and LightCastle Partners will co-implement the program, collaborating with key private firms and knowledge institutions from both the Netherlands and Bangladesh. The initiative promotes Dutch-Bangladesh collaboration by introducing innovative techniques and training.

The signing ceremony included Managing Director Mr. Ataul Karim, Director Mr. Tarique Sarker from the FishTech team, Mr. Simon Sanguin, Global R&D Team Lead of Royal De Heus, Mr. Victor Bierbooms, owner of Viqon Water Solutions, Mr. Rogier Becker, Emerging Market Advisor from Larive, and Mr. Zahedul Amin, Director of LightCastle Partners.

The finalized plans for the Mymensingh and Cox’s Bazar CoEs are crucial for constructing and developing these facilities. The CoEs will showcase sustainable fish breeding and cultivation techniques. They will provide training and research opportunities for local fish breeders and farmers.

This signing is part of a broader consortium visit from September 8th to 12th. The visit included site tours to Mymensingh, Cox’s Bazar, and Patuakhali. The CoEs in these regions will transfer knowledge and best practices to over 1,800 fish breeders and farmers. They will also help reduce post-harvest losses by improving market connectivity.

Construction of the Centers of Excellence is progressing in Mymensingh, Cox’s Bazar, and Khulna, paving the way for innovation. The FTB initiative actively drives transformative change in the aquaculture sector, enhancing practices across the region. It equips Bangladesh’s fish farmers with essential tools and expertise, helping them thrive in a more sustainable and competitive market.
