Larive International and LightCastle Partners arranged a field visit to project site locations in Bangladesh for the representatives of Dutch consortium partners of the FoodTechBangladesh (FTB) project between August 28 and September 1, 2022. The purpose of the field visits was to develop a ground-level understanding of the sites where the Center of Excellence (CoE) will be established and core project operations will be held. It also created an opportunity for Dutch and Bangladeshi consortium members to exchange information and insights about the current state of the sites, proposed project activities, and the initial requirements for site development and operations.
Under the FTB project, an aqua feed line of the Rupshi Feed Mill will be upgraded by installing additional equipment to enable the production of specialized aqua starter feed.
In addition, the field team visited the feed testing lab at the mill and interacted with the lab officials to get an overview of the testing process, equipment usage, and standard practices. Finally, the visiting team attended a presentation and dialogue session where the parties discussed the production capacity of the feed plants, feed varieties and their performance, market positioning of the feed products, market competition, opportunities for improving the productivity and efficiency of the feed plants, and potential benefits from the collaboration under the FTB project.
Aftab Bahumukhi Farms Ltd. proposed a CoE site in Cox’s Bazar for the aquaculture of Barramundi and Rosenbergii. They are planning to establish a hatchery for Barramundi at this location. Representatives from Larive International, LightCastle Partners, Nutreco, Viqon B.V., and Aftab Bahumukhi Farms Ltd. paid a visit to the site.
During the site visit, the representatives exchanged ideas on the topography of the site, availability of freshwater and saline water, availability of electricity, fluctuations in surface and water temperatures, water quality, and so on.
The field team visited Aftab Bahumukhi Farms Ltd.’s second CoE site for Tilapia and Rohu/Carp aquaculture at Snanghat Union of Bahubal Upazila in Habiganj.
Gemini Sea Food Ltd. proposed a CoE site specifically for Tilapia and Pabda/Catfish aquaculture. The proposed site is near their shrimp processing facility at Jabusha under Rupsha Upazila in Khulna. The site is 76 km from the Jashore airport and is situated near the banks of the Rupsha river.
The representatives from Gemini Sea Food Ltd. took the field team to the site and explained the topography. They also touched upon the issues of groundwater level and salinity, availability of electricity, presence of iron in the water, challenges in unloading construction equipment, and so on. Thereafter, the field team was given a tour of the aquaculture site that is adjacent to the processing plant.
The members of the field team observed the grower ponds. They received information from the relevant officials on farming practices for Rohu and Carp species. After learning about the grower pond aquaculture, the field team went to the shrimp processing plant. The officials from the plant shared all the steps for shrimp processing with the field team. They also provided an overview of the activities conducted in each section of the plant. Finally, the representatives of Gemini Sea Food Ltd. had a meeting with Victor Bierbooms, Director, Viqon B.V. They discussed different aspects of the recirculating aquaculture system (RAS). Moreover, they discussed strategies for the development of the CoE site, the advantages and disadvantages of different construction materials, etc.
The FoodTechBangladesh (FTB) consortium will be setting up the centers of excellence in three locations– Jessore, Sylhet, and Cox’s Bazaar– by 2023. The centers will demonstrate aquaculture farming best practices to farmers and other value chain actors.
