Cox’s Bazar, September 21, 2025 — A landmark step in advancing sustainable aquaculture in Bangladesh was marked yesterday with the inauguration of In-Pond Raceway System (IPRS) farming technology under the Dutch-funded FoodTechBangladesh programme.
The ceremony was attended by Ms. Farida Akhter, Honourable Adviser to the Ministry of Fisheries and Livestock (MoFL); H.E. Joris van Bommel, Ambassador of the Kingdom of the Netherlands to Bangladesh; and Dr. Md. Abdur Rouf, Director General of the Department of Fisheries, along with representatives from leading private sector companies and development partners.
FoodTechBangladesh is a public-private-partnership programme co-funded by the Embassy of the Kingdom of the Netherlands. The programme is being co-implemented by Larive International and LightCastle Partners, and works to strengthen sustainable aquaculture practices by establishing Centers of Excellence (CoEs) across Bangladesh and contributing to farmers’ capacity development. Its aim is to accelerate technology transfer, increase productivity, and create inclusive opportunities for smallholder farmers.
Speaking at the ceremony, Adviser Farida Akhter underscored the potential of IPRS technology to increase the density of fish farming and boost national aquaculture production. She emphasized the importance of ensuring that smallholder farmers are able to access and benefit from such innovations.
Ambassador Joris van Bommel reinforced the Netherlands’ continued commitment to working with Bangladesh across agriculture and aquaculture sectors, with a focus on advancing sustainable production and long-term cooperation.
Dr. Md. Abdur Rouf highlighted the Department of Fisheries’ pivotal role in scaling this technology and ensuring its adoption nationwide. He stressed the opportunity for IPRS to improve farmer livelihoods and reinforce Bangladesh’s position as a global aquaculture leader.
Jordi Drietelaar, Export Director (Asia) of De Heus, emphasized their collaboration with FishTech and the FoodTechBangladesh programme, and reinforced De Heus’ commitment to contributing to Bangladesh’s animal feed and nutrition sector through the supply of high-quality feed.
The inauguration of IPRS technology signals a new chapter in Bangladesh’s aquaculture sector, paving the way for higher yields, greater efficiency, and more inclusive growth.
