GIZ Initiates a New Project with LightCastle to Conduct a Study on Seaweed Value Chain Analysis

LightCastle Partners has teamed up with GIZ (Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit) to conduct a Seaweed Value Chain Analysis in Bangladesh. This study seeks to unlock the long-term potential of the seaweed industry. It will focus on market analysis, processing capabilities, international opportunities, institutional support, and cost-benefit assessments. The findings will shape sustainable strategies for seaweed farming in the country.

GIZ, a global leader in sustainable development, is partnering with the Department of Fisheries (DoF) to enhance marine conservation and develop Bangladesh’s seaweed value chain. A key focus of their work is the Swatch of No Ground (SoNG), an underwater canyon stretching from the Sundarbans to the Bay of Bengal. This critical marine ecosystem supports biodiversity, food security, and coastal livelihoods.

The conservation of SoNG, managed by the Forest Department (BFD) under the Ministry of Environment, Forest, and Climate Change (MoEFCC) and guided by the Marine Fisheries Act (2020), is essential. It promotes sustainable fishing practices and supports small-scale fishers. To further these efforts, the DoF is strengthening stakeholder collaboration and exploring commercial seaweed cultivation in Cox’s Bazar and other coastal areas.

Over the next five months, LightCastle will explore the potential for seaweed cultivation in two key regions: the Barisal-Patuakhali Belt and the Chattogram Belt. The study will include 120 surveys targeting active and former farmers, individuals engaged in related activities, and residents of seaweed-prone areas.

To ensure robust data, the team will also conduct focus group discussions (FGDs), in-depth interviews (IDIs), and key informant interviews (KIIs). Additionally, a stakeholder consultation workshop will validate the findings and refine the strategic roadmap.

LightCastle, in partnership with technical and market development experts, will perform a detailed assessment of the seaweed value chain. The study will focus on analyzing market trends and identifying growth opportunities. Importantly, it will emphasize the inclusion of women and youth in the value chain. This inclusive approach aims to boost local economies while also protecting marine ecosystems.

Based on the findings, a national strategic roadmap will be developed. This plan will include actionable recommendations for policy reform, infrastructure upgrades, and partnerships. These efforts aim to scale up seaweed production sustainably. Ultimately, the study will offer a clear blueprint for achieving economic growth while safeguarding Bangladesh’s unique marine environment.
