The fisheries sector in Bangladesh contributes approx. $9.42bn to the national GDP, caters to 60% of the annual protein consumption and provides a source of livelihood to more than 12% of the country’s population.
One of the biggest drivers behind the growth of the fisheries sector in the country has been Bangladeshi aquaculture. Today, we are the 5th largest aquaculture producer in the world.
Despite tremendous advances in aquaculture, there are systemic challenges that need to be tackled for sustainable growth. Some of the major challenges include limited land and water resources for fish production, the unaffordability of high-quality feed, and a lack of awareness of hygiene protocols and food safety.
To address such challenges, initiatives on promoting vertical expansion in fish farming, bolstering domestic production of high-quality feed, and increasing the capacity of fish farmers are essential.
