With over 1Mn entrepreneurs and 8Mn+ workers, the poultry sector is growing at a rate of 15 percent per year, where 65 to 70 percent of the sector actors are constituted of backyard poultries. This underscores the importance of reaching these grassroots farmers to cultivate a culture of safe and sustainable farming practices.
Acknowledging this importance, Bangladesh Poultry Industries Central Council (BPICC), Department of Livestock Services (DLS), and PoultryTechBangladesh collaborated to conduct training programs on farm management and biosecurity measures. The training was funded by the Embassy of the Kingdom of the Netherlands in Bangladesh, Larive International, and LightCastle Partners. As a part of this collaboration, two training programs were held in Tangail: at Madhupur upazila on 23 April and at Ghatail upazila on 24 April 2025.
The opening remarks for the training programs were delivered by Dr. Shahiduzzaman, Upazila Livestock Officer (ULO), Madhupur, and Dr. Md. Bahauddin Sarwar Rizvi, ULO, Ghatail, respectively, for the two programs. The Chief Guest of the two programs, Mr. A.T.M. Mostafa Kamal, General Secretary of BPICC, echoed the dangers of unsafe farming practices and the consequent risks of foodborne pathogens like Salmonella and Campylobacter from poultry to humans. Chairing both programs, Dr. Md. Mostafizur Rahman, District Livestock Officer (DLO), also highlighted the importance of safe and sustainable farming practices in ensuring the safety and quality of egg and poultry meat production.
At both locations, Mr. Md. Zahidul Islam, CEO, Bangla-UK Agro Products Limited, and a Master Trainer of PoultryTechBangladesh, was one of the trainers of these training programs. The ULOs of each upazila were also the trainers at their respective locations. The trainings covered discussions on responsible use of antibiotics, vaccination and biosecurity measures, poultry waste management, financial management, and best farming practices.
Through these training programs, more than 130 farmers from Tangail were made aware of reducing or eliminating the use of antibiotics, hormones, and synthetic pesticides, which leads to the production of higher-quality meat and eggs. The participants were also taught about the importance of sustainable farming, aiming at optimizing the use of water, feed, and energy, ensuring proper management of poultry litter and waste, and minimizing soil and water pollution and greenhouse emissions. The training sensitized the farmers on the value of efficient resource management, lower disease incidence, and improved bird health in reducing their operating costs.
To equip the farmers with a comprehensive understanding of the discussed topic, the training programs enabled an interactive modality of knowledge transfer by inviting open discussions and questions from the participants. The trainings identified a key area of curiosity in the proper farm biosecurity measures, highlighting the strong need for continuing and expanding such capacity-building initiatives, especially for the grassroots poultry farmers.
