PoultryTechBangladesh–a public-private partnership co-funded by the Embassy of the Kingdom of the Netherlands, including leading Dutch and Bangladeshi companies active across the poultry value chain – in collaboration with the Breeders Association of Bangladesh (BAB) and the Feed Industries Association Bangladesh (FIAB) -co-hosted a roundtable discussion on 30th of August, 2022.
Bangladesh poultry sector leaders including Abu Luthfe Fazle Rahim Khan, Managing Director of Aftab Bahumukhi Farms Ltd.; Md. Ahsanuzzaman, Director, Spectra Hexa Feeds Ltd.; Nazrul Islam, Associate Vice-president, ACI Godrej Pvt. Ltd; Tipu Sultan, Managing Director, Chhuya Agro Products; Md. Lutfor Rahman, CEO, AG Agro Industries Ltd.; Saheda Pervin Trisha, Director, VIP Shahadat Poultry & Hatchery Ltd. Md. Saiful Alam Khan, Managing Director, Agro Chicks & Fisheries Ltd.; Mahabubur Rahman, Peoples Poultry & Hatchery Ltd. among others participated in the discussion along with key members of the FIAB and BAB. Dr. Bibek Roy, Deputy Director, Bangladesh Department of Livestock was also present.
The discussion focused on challenges experienced by the poultry sector amid the global turmoil, as well as more structural and systemic bottlenecks hindering the potential growth of the sector.
When discussing the future of the poultry industry, Md. Nazrul Islam, Associate Vice President of ACI Godrej Agrovet Private Limited, stated that “By 2035, we expect that the annual egg consumption will go up to 323 per person from 105 and per capita, chicken meat consumption will be 21Kg from 7Kg at present. Hence, we should focus on food safety and develop a traceable and integrated backward linkage for ensuring profitability for farmers and quality products for consumers at an affordable price.
PoultryTechBangladesh is a 5-year long programme that would be active till December 2025. The initiative has been developed and is coordinated by Larive International and LightCastle Partners, and includes companies and knowledge institutes from the Netherlands and Bangladesh: Aeres Training Centre International, Aftab Bahumukhi Farms, Hendrix Genetics, Kazi Farms, Marel Poultry, Mavitec, Nutreco, Royal Pas Reform, Van Aarsen and HATO Agricultural Lighting.
The partnership is committed to working together in strengthening the Bangladeshi poultry sector. With collaborative efforts between the Netherlands Enterprise Agency, the Embassy of the Kingdom of the Netherlands in Bangladesh, and leading Dutch and Bangladeshi parties, the consortium aims to increase productivity, biosecurity, and knowledge levels, and to share values about responsible business practices. Simultaneously, it seeks to trigger and support entrepreneurship and stimulate Dutch–Bangladeshi trade.
