LightCastle Partners to Conduct Ecosystem Mapping and Diagnostic Assessment of Small Business Financing Ecosystem in Bangladesh for The Asia Foundation

LightCastle Partners has partnered with The Asia Foundation to conduct a comprehensive assessment of the micro, small and medium business financing ecosystem. The initiative aims to generate strategic insights into the opportunities and challenges in enhancing access to finance for businesses, while identifying practical pathways to strengthen financial inclusion through fintech partnerships.

Understanding Financing for Small Businesses in Bangladesh

Contributing to more than 25 % of the national GDP, micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs) are a driving force behind the economy of Bangladesh, significantly fostering employment, industrial growth, and entrepreneurship. Despite continued policy attention and expanding digital financial services, access to formal finance remains one of the most persistent challenges for this sector. Many businesses, particularly smaller and women-led enterprises, continue to face barriers in accessing affordable and appropriate financial products, limiting their ability to grow, innovate, and create jobs. From the lenders’ perspective, financial institutions are concerned about the risks and costs associated with reaching the grassroots level businesses or managing lending products with a smaller ticket size, due to the absence or lack of necessary information to assess their credit worthiness.

To better manage such mismatches, Bangladesh’s rapidly evolving fintech landscape presents new opportunities to rethink how financial services reach underserved businesses, leveraging the digital footprint of businesses for alternative credit scoring. As digital financial infrastructure continues to expand and technology-driven solutions become increasingly accessible, stronger collaboration between financial institutions, fintech providers, policymakers, and ecosystem actors has the potential to improve financial inclusion and broaden access to small business finance. And to ensure an effective collaboration in strengthening the small business lending ecosystem, it is important to understand the existing intricacies of the lending and borrowing journey, identifying the areas for strategic intervention.

Building an Evidence Base for Inclusive MSME Financing

Through this ecosystem landscaping, LightCastle Partners will assess Bangladesh’s MSME finance ecosystem to better understand the opportunities, constraints, and institutional dynamics influencing small business financing. The study will examine the broader financing landscape, identify key barriers affecting enterprises and financial service providers, and explore the role that digital financial solutions can play in improving access to finance.

The engagement will also generate evidence-based recommendations to support a more connected and responsive financing ecosystem for MSMEs. By bringing together insights from public and private sector stakeholders, industry actors, and enterprises across Bangladesh, the study aims to inform future initiatives that strengthen financial access while fostering greater collaboration across the ecosystem.

Advancing Sustainable Financial Inclusion through Strategic Recommendations

This initiative reflects a shared commitment of LightCastle Partners to supporting a more inclusive and resilient MSME financing landscape in Bangladesh. By strengthening the evidence base around small business finance and highlighting opportunities for innovation, the engagement seeks to contribute to practical solutions that expand economic opportunity for entrepreneurs and support sustainable private sector growth.
