As Bangladesh stands at the crossroads of climate change and technological advancement, its agriculture sector remains a cornerstone of economic stability and social progress. Representing the lifeblood of rural livelihoods and a critical contributor to the national economy, the sector faces mounting challenges from inefficiencies, fragmented value chains, and traditional farming practices—areas where agritech solutions can play a transformative role.
Agritech innovation, however, offers an unprecedented opportunity to address these constraints – bringing modernisation, enhancing productivity, and unlocking new market opportunities for millions of smallholder farmers.
The agritech sector in Bangladesh, though in its infancy, has shown remarkable growth in recent years. The sector has attracted over USD 15 Mn to date, with a record-breaking USD 6.6 Mn secured in 2021. A major portion of this funding has targeted output market linkage startups (50%) and financial access solutions for farmers (41%), reflecting the sector’s focus on addressing systemic bottlenecks. Global interest, especially in precision farming and IoT-based solutions, underscores agritech’s potential to drive meaningful financial and social impact.
Despite its promise, the sector is not without challenges. Inefficient supply chains, limited access to finance, and outdated practices continue to hinder scalability. However, tailored solutions such as blended finance models, digital infrastructure development, and partnerships with international donors and development partners are making headway. These interventions are fostering an ecosystem where innovation and collaboration are driving the sector forward.
Policy reforms are a cornerstone of this transformation. Strengthening public-private partnerships, introducing regulatory sandboxes, and investing in logistics infrastructure are critical to scaling agritech solutions. Additionally, sustainability and inclusivity remain at the forefront, ensuring that smallholder farmers, women, and marginalized communities can fully participate in and benefit from the sector’s growth.
Bangladesh has the opportunity to position itself as a leader in agritech innovation, serving as a model for other countries in the region. By addressing systemic challenges with strategic investments, fostering innovation, and embedding sustainability, the agritech sector can catalyse long-lasting improvements in productivity, resilience, and equitable growth.
